Our Story

Why We Started the Curtain Call Collective

The Curtain Call Collective was founded out of a simple but powerful realization: while there were dance programs available for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), there were very few—if any—theatre-based programs designed specifically for this community.

As a theatre artist and nonprofit leader, our Executive Director saw a gap—and an opportunity. Theatre games and creative storytelling offer unique benefits that go beyond performance, including movement, confidence, imagination, social connection, language development, emotional expression, and intellectual growth. The idea of blending the proven benefits of theatre with the accessibility of IDD programming felt not only natural, but necessary.

That belief was reinforced through past experience as the Executive Director of a theatre company, where opportunities arose to present live theatre productions for members of the IDD community. The results were nothing short of astonishing—increased focus, deeper emotional expression, stronger social skills, and a powerful sense of inclusion and belonging.

Those moments made it clear: theatre is more than entertainment. It is a tool for self-discovery, connection, and growth. The need for these programs was real—and the impact was undeniable.

The Curtain Call Collective was created to meet that need, providing inclusive theatre-arts programs that help individuals in the IDD community gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their surroundings, and their place within the larger community. We believe these programs don’t just belong—they thrive.
